The Color of Water $18.99 Who is Ruth McBride Jordan? A self-declared "light-skinned" woman evasive about her ethnicity, yet steadfast in her love for her twelve black children. James McBride, journalist, musician and son, explores his mother's past, as well as his own upbringing and heritage, in a poignant and powerful debut, The Color Of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. The son of a black minister and a woman who would not admit she was white, James McBride grew up in "orchestrated chaos" with his eleven siblings in the poor, all-black projects of Red Hook, Brooklyn. "Mommy," a fiercely protective woman with "dark eyes full of pep and fire," herded her brood to Manhattan's free cultural events, sent them off on buses to the best (and mainly Jewish) schools, demanded good grades and commanded respect. As a young man, McBride saw his mother as a source of embarrassment, worry, and confusion--and reached thirty before he began to discover the truth about her early life and long-buried pain. In The Color of Water, McBride retraces his mother's footsteps and, through her searing and spirited voice, recreates her remarkable story. The daughter of a failed itinerant Orthodox rabbi, she was born Rachel Shilsky (actually Ruchel Dwara Zylska) in Poland on April 1, 1921. Fleeing pogroms, her family emigrated to America and ultimately settled in Suffolk, Virginia, a small town where anti-Semitism and racial tensions ran high. With candor and immediacy, Ruth describes her parents' loveless marriage; her fragile, handicapped mother; her cruel, sexually-abusive father; and the rest of the family and life she abandoned. At seventeen, after fleeing Virginia and settling in New York City, Ruth married a black minister and founded the all-black New Brown Memorial Baptist Church in her Red Hook living room. "God is the color of water," Ruth McBride taught her children, firmly convinced that life's blessings and life's values transcend race. Twice widowed, and continually confronting overwhelming adversity and racism, Ruth's determination, drive and discipline saw her dozen children through college--and most through graduate school. At age 65, she herself received a degree in social work from Temple University. Interspersed throughout his mother's compelling narrative, McBride shares candid recollections of his own experiences as a mixed-race child of poverty, his flirtations with drugs and violence, and his eventual self-realization and professional success. The Color of Water touches readers of all colors as a vivid portrait of growing up, a haunting meditation on race and identity, and a lyrical valentine to a mother from her son. |

Choosing the Right Carpet Colors for Your Home
Finding a store or flooring company that offers expert installation is a good start since laying a carpet successfully is a lot trickier than it looks. Many flooring companies offer very competitive prices on the service and it is well worth the small extra investment.
Once you have found a flooring company you are comfortable with the real decision making starts. Plush or frieze? Pattern or wool? Texture and brand is a big consideration when shopping for new carpet but the most difficult choice is the color.
If you are standing in a showroom filled with dozens of carpet choices in your chosen texture it can be hard to even begin to figure out which would look best in your home. When choosing a carpet color one of the first things you need to figure out is how you want the room to "feel" to those who might be entering it for the first time.
To add a welcoming sense of warmth to a room such as a smaller living room or den for instance, carpets whose color falls into the "fire family" category tend to work best. These range from yellowy oranges to bluish reds. If, on the other hand, you are going for a sense of cool elegance, water colors – any that might possibly make one think of water – are a perfect choice.
Neutrals and beige colors are a hugely popular choice of course because they can blend in seamlessly with almost any décor, from the most traditional to trendy and futuristic. The downside is of course that they will stain and show wear far more easily than darker shades so may not be the best color choice for high traffic areas.
How much light a room generally gets can affect carpet color choice as well. In a room that gets very little in the way of natural sunlight choosing a darker carpet color will only add to the sense of gloom bcause it will absorb a great deal of what little light does manage to make its way in. Using a light colored carpet in this situation will, of course, have the opposite effect and actually help brighten the room up, no additional lighting necessary.
When you have narrowed your carpet color choices down to just a few in the showroom, ask the staff for samples of the carpets you are considering so that you can see how they will actually look in the room you are redecorating. The lights in the showroom are probably far brighter than in your house and the color may look completely different when you bring the carpet home.
Almost all good flooring companies have carpet sample squares available and some will even bring them out to your home and offer their expertise to help you make an informed decision about what really works best. Carpeting a room is not a small investment and as with any other home remodeling project seeking help from the experts to get it right for the first time is never a bad idea.

Pickard China
When most people, including many collectors, think about porcelain, their thoughts tend to go first to the famous European manufactures. The Schlegelmilch family in Germany & Eastern Europe or the factory's of Havilland and their peers in the French Limoges region, along with a host of other notable makers around the world. However, some of the finest artist decorated porcelain produced in the late Eighteen Hundreds and into the early 20th Century, came not from a factory, but from Wilder A. Pickard, a Chicago salesman who would build America's preeminent china decorating studio.
Beginning in 1889, as a salesman for the Pauline Pottery Co. of Chicago, Pickard sold hand decorated items throughout the mid-west. When Pauline failed in the mid Eighteen Hundreds, Pickard formed an alliance with Mae Johnson, a former Pauline artist who had begun offering china decorating classes. He would supply her with china blanks and decorating materials, and she in turn would supply him with a line of hand painted china. This relationship would last until the close of the 19th Century, with Pickard making a living selling an assortment of art goods, including water-colors, glassware and hand painted china. Although Pickard never decorated any china himself, in 1898, he would take out his first advertisement as a "China Decorator", and build a business that would eventually employ hundreds of artists and decorators.
From a scattered cottage industry, in 1903, Pickard would locate his first studio in a Chicago carriage barn on Whiting Street. Which, between 1903 & 05 would employ over fifty artists. In 1905 Pickard China would build a large new studio, in the Ravenswood area of Chicago. A three story building with 2 floors of studio space, a display room and offices.
From 1898 until the 1930's, Pickard Studios, employed some of America & Europe's most talented decorators, painting on the finest blank china, imported from Limoges & Europe, creating some of the most beautiful china ever made. By 1909, Pickard would claim to be producing over "over 1000 designs, available through 1000 stores".
Pickard studios would continue to produce the highest quality, artist designed hand painted china until the economic upheavals of the 1930's. During the Depression, public preferences and price competition would force the company to turn to transfer designs. 1n 1937, Pickard would build its own china Plant in Antioch Il., and turn increasingly to the manufacture of dinnerware. Although the decorating department would continue at the Ravenswood Studio, producing specialty items until the 1950's, it would represent only a small part of Picard's production.
After Wilder Pickard's death in 1939, he would be succeeded by his son Austin, who would guide Pickard Inc. into a modern manufacturing business. The company survives.

Great Paintings $30 Great Paintings is a sumptuous, visual guided tour of 66 of the world's greatest paintings. Ranging from works by Zhang Zeduan, a 12th-century Chinese master, to modern masterpieces by Rothko and Anselm Kiefer, the paintings are arranged chronologically, providing an excellent visual introduction to the history of art. The book starts with how to "read" a painting. Annotated paintings show how to identify the key elements of a picture. The major part of the book is a magnificent visual gallery of iconic paintings. The story behind each painting is fully explained, unlocking the often hidden meanings of symbols and details. Each painting is then analyzed visually, using pull-out details and overlays, to help the reader understand the key features, composition, and techniques. Artists' biographies and features on historical and social context explore how landmark paintings have been influenced by what has gone before and how they go on to inspire what comes after them. Reading Great Paintings is like being taken around a gallery by a personal guide who helps you to look at paintings-both familiar and new-in fresh and fascinating ways.
