How to Paint Eyes Using Shadows and Light that Bring Your Painting to Life
As you learn how to paint eyes you should know that you will encounter shadows and light in all portrait paintings. Getting the correct shadow areas and light or highlighted areas will bring your portraits to life.
Shadows in the Eye
An example of shadow in the eye would be something like this; even though you know that an iris is blue, shadows may prevent the blues from showing up. The iris appears partly blue and partly black. Parts of the iris may be as dark as the pupil. Even though your brain tells you that the iris is blue, you need to ignore your brain and follow your eyes. If the iris is as dark as the pupil, paint it that way. Keeping the dark areas dark will make the iris look more lifelike and will enhance the shadow appearance.
Shadows that appear on the eyeball are just as important as on the colored part of the eye. The inner and outer portions of the "white" of the eye are often darker than the inner portion. Sometimes because they are recessed, they are in shadow. Create shadows on the eyeball by using a grayed version of the white eyeball color.
Light or highlighted areas of the eyes.
One of the most important areas of the eyes for light is the catch-light or highlight on the pupil. I usually add a touch of bright white on the area where the pupil meets the iris. This gives the indication of reflection or moisture. Sometimes it's very effective to add some bright areas of color to the iris of the eye as well. As you are creating the color variations of the iris, don't be afraid to put in a few very bright spots. As always, really study your model and see where the brightest areas are.

Tips on Becomming an Abstract Artist
If you are planning on creating a piece of abstract art and have not done so up to now, here are some tips that might be able to help you realize your goal.
To paint an abstract painting, a strong imagination and good sense of inspiration are indispensable. Abstract art is being able to put many colors, shapes, and textures collectively to construct a finished piece. When working with abstract art, many artists begin different ways subject to how their state of mind is and how their imaginations work.
An simple way to get going is to think of an item that you would like to compose. Now that you have an item in mind, abstract it. Make believe that the object is a blur and try creating the shapes and colors that you see most. You can adjoin numerous shapes and colors to the artwork making it even more.
Interestingly enough, music is another tool that helps many artists start their picture. The rhythm of which the music is played can determine how fast or slow an artist works. It can also have an impact on the actual picture in many ways...if the music is noisy and fast, then the work of art can be bright and loud. If the music is of a slower type, the painting can be unimaginative and somber.
Since Abstract Art is the most unreservedly formed type of artwork, there is no right or wrong. Let your mind take command and do the work for you. You might be surprised what you can do when your creativity and your relatively unconstrained mind are put together. If this is your first time painting, here is a good way to get started with your painting:
Right up front you are going to require your supplies...this will allow you to put your emotions in a visual state for others to see. Go to your local art supply shop and pick up a common paint brush ($10.00). you can easily purchase more extravagant paint brushes but seeing that you are a novice, an standard paint brush will work fine. Along with your imagination, this paint brush will be an principal tool to getting your painting started.
Now that you have your paint brush, the next item on the list would be the paint. Some paintings are filled with lively colors; while others could lack color altogether...this is your choice and your choice only! That is the beauty of abstract painting...you can do anything you would like, there are no guidelines to follow. A modest paint set with limited colors can be found on the internet for a modest figure. This would be excellent for beginners before buying the larger more costly paint. Keep in mind that acrylic paint dries very fast so you are able to over paint your piece several times.
So now you have your paint brush and your paint...the last item is something to paint on. It could be anything from common paper to primed paper, or maybe even canvas. Because you are just starting out, and painting on a canvas could be a pretty expensive, I would start by painting on paper. There are various different types of paper determined by which medium you choose to work with.
Once you decide on your paper you are all ready to start your abstract painting. The term abstract expressionism is a very popular type of abstract art. This is executing your painting with no outline at all. This creates direct abstractness as your brush takes over and thoughts from your instinct go right onto your paper. You can follow this technique, or you can embark on your painting with a game plan. You can know what you want to paint before you begin painting. Sure this may be less natural, but there have been many excellent pieces of abstract art that have come with a preconceived plan. So opt for what best suits you and start your painting.
Make sure you contemplate your painting throughout working on it. Take time to stand back and study what you have created. This is valuable as you will be able to ascertain where you can add more shapes and colors to justify the image you are trying to portray. Most importantly, learn to loosen up and have fun! Once you have concluded your work of art, take in the joy and pleasure that it gives you as you should be able to experience the connection you have with the painting.

I bought an original painting 4 years ago valued at $580 (i paid only $290)...?
and I want to sell it today, how much would the value have appreciated?
The artist isn't extremely well known, it's a large painting, original acrylic on canvas.

You bought the art at a discount, but unfortunately that makes its original value $290. If I have all my 16x20's priced at $1000, but sell them at $499.95 . . . they were never worth $1000. Value is set by price received.
The best you can do is see what the artist is selling for these days. Art, even as an investment, has been shown to not appreciate like say, real estate. Recently the news has been sour for the art auctions houses, with some paintings not selling at all, let alone for the reduced values expected! It is not good news for both artists and collectors . . . but it is the reality of these economic times.
