Rejections of Famous Authors Before They Were Famous
Writers who keep sending their work out will eventually be published.
Among the rejection slips I've received, my favorite was from a science fiction anthology: a full-page drawing of a dragon dabbing at his eyes with a Kleenex as its tears flowed down. It was much funnier than these meager words can describe. I once showed it to a friend, also a science fiction writer, who didn't find it quite as amusing. It's a matter of attitude; I couldn't do anything about the rejection, and it was a change of pace from the usual, uninspired form letter.
If you have trouble staying motivated in the face of an expanding file of rejection slips, perhaps this list of comments some now-famous writers received about their work will help.
* Crash by J.G. Ballard: "The author of this book is beyond psychiatric help."
* Dr. Seuss: "Too different from other juveniles on the market to warrant its selling."
* Torrents of Spring by Ernest Hemingway: "It would be extremely rotten taste, to say nothing of being horribly cruel, should we want to publish this."
* The San Francisco Examiner, rejecting Rudyard Kipling: "I'm sorry, Mr. Kipling, but you just don't know how to use the English language."
* Lust for Life, Irving Stone's historical novel about Vincent Van Gogh: "A long, dull novel about an artist." Sixteen publishers rejected the novel. When it finally saw print it sold more than 25 million copies.
* Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach: "Jonathan Livingston Seagull will never make it as a paperback." The novel eventually sold to Avon Books and racked up sales of more than 7.25 million copies.
* Tony Hillerman, best known for his Navajo Tribal Police mystery novels was advised by publishers to "Get rid of all that Indian stuff."
* The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells: "An endless nightmare. I do not believe it would 'take'... I think the verdict would be 'Oh don't read that horrid book.'"
* Although Emily Dickinson published only seven poems in her lifetime, an early rejection advised her: "(Your poems) are quite as remarkable for defects as for beauties and are generally devoid of true poetical qualities."
* Animal Farm by George Orwell: "It is impossible to sell animal stories in the USA."
* So many publishers rejected The Tale of Peter Rabbit that Beatrix Potter published it herself.
* Lord of the Flies by William Golding: "An absurd and uninteresting fantasy which was rubbish and dull."
* One publisher to another on John Le Carre's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold: "You're welcome to le Carre--he hasn't got any future."
* The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel: "We are very impressed with the depth and scope of your research and the quality of your prose. Nevertheless... we don't think we could distribute enough copies to satisfy you or ourselves."
* The Deer Park by Norman Mailer: "This will set publishing back 25 years."
* Carrie by Stephen King: "We are not interested in science fiction which deals with negative utopias. They do not sell."
And my favorite:
* Sanctuary by William Faulkner: "Good God, I can't publish this!"
Fiction editing is a subjective process. There will always be editors who think your writing is crap, but there are also editors who will be enthusiastic about it. You just have to find them. And the only way to find them is to keep sending out your work.

Whether You Reside in Marietta, Atlanta, Roswell, or Alpharetta, This is The Portrait Of The Ideal Georgia Painter
You don't need to be Picasso to paint the exterior of a Georgia home, but you do need to have some skills to paint a home or building professionally. All painters are not created equal – they vary in terms of experience, materials, work crews and time to complete a painting job properly.
One of the best investments you can make in your Georgia home whether you reside in Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell or Atlanta is repainting, with estimates boosting the resale of your home by 25%. Don't let old, shabby, peeling or faded paint ruin your home's appearance! If it's time to give your home a makeover or fresh look, here are some tips for choosing a knowledgeable painting contractor who will make your Georgia home look fabulous!
1. Don't let your husband do it. As guys, we think it's in our blood to be able to paint. Unfortunately, most do-it-yourselfers or weekend fix-er-uppers end up making a mess. Why? Sure, most people know how to paint, but they don't know how to prepare the surface to make sure the paint sticks! Going to the counter at Home Depot doesn't constitute knowing what paint to buy to combat Georgia's weather shifts including rain, sleet and even snow. Plus, it takes more than a man with a new paintbrush and dropcloth and four weekends to spare to paint the exterior of your home so it will last 3 – 5 years.
2. Choose a Georgia painter that offers competitive pricing. Oftentimes, you will get three painting estimates and two are pretty close, but one may be quite a bit lower. Be wary! You don't want to hire a painter that will cut corners like thinning paints or using substandard materials. Generally, the price of paint, tools and labor do not fluctuate that much between painters, so you have to ask yourself: how is the painter with the lowest bid going to save money? Also, most painters in Georgia estimate by the job, not by the hour. Painters who care about repeat customers will take great pride in the outcome of their work and offer fair pricing.
3. Choose a Georgia painter that knows about good paint preparation work. The difference between a good painting job and a bad one often lies in the prep work. Over time, homes get dirty, oily and the paint begins to chip. Is your Georgia painter going to powerwash the exterior of your home? Is he going to sand and/or scrape the places where the paint is chipping? How many coats are going to be applied and what is the quality of the paint? Bottom line – there is cheap paint and good paint. The consequence in using cheap paint is it will peel or chip sooner. Just like you purchase upgrades when buying a new home, don't skimp on the quality of the paint or the costs for good surface preparation.
4. Choose a Georgia painter with a quality team. Who will be painting your house? I hate to say it, but many painters hire cheap labor or even day laborers. Choose an exterior painting contractor with a stable painting crew who is willing to at a minimum supervise the painting project. You shouldn't expect your painters to show up in suits, but they shouldn't look like the town drunk either!
5. Choose a Georgia painter with excellent referrals. Ask your Georgia painter for referrals and CALL them. Or, take a field trip and look at some of the houses they have painted in your neighborhood or beyond. Quality painters will have a list of people who recommend them.
6. Choose a Georgia painter with insurance. Make sure your painter has enough insurance to cover any damage to your property and good insurance for their workers. You do not want to be responsible if a painter falls off a ladder. The Georgia painting company you choose should have a decent worker's compensation and liability insurance policy.
7. Choose a Georgia painter that offers a warranty. Does your painter use premium quality paint and what is the terms of the warrantee? Not only is what is covered important, but how long it is covered.
8. Choose a Georgia painter that is neat and efficient. Even though we're talking about exterior painting, your driveway, walkways and shrubbery should be covered with dropcloths. Your Georgia painters should clean up after themselves and not take forever to finish the painting project. Granted, you don't want them to hurry, but you don't want part-time Georgia painters either!
As a painter in the Roswell, Atlanta & Marietta, Georgia area for more than ___ years, I have seen some painting nightmares. Get your Georgia exterior painting project off your "honey do" list and on the "honey it's done and looks fantastic" list!

List of Famous Poets
What follows is a brief list of famous poets who have immortalized themselves for all time on the printed page.
William Blake (November 28, 1757- August 12, 1827)
Something of a mystic, English poet and painter William Blake claimed that he derived his works (such as his method of engraving pictures and words on copper plates) from divine inspiration. His radical views on religion and science among other things had damaged his reputation as an artist, and it was only after his death that future generations rediscovered his work and reappraised his talent. "Songs of Innocence," Blake's 1789 collection of poetry and art include the poems "The Lamb," "The Tiger," "Little Boy Lost" and "Little Boy Found."
Robert Frost (March 26, 1874 - January 29, 1963)
One of the principal American poets of the 20th century, Robert Frost had been awarded four Pulitzer Prizes for his poetry, which was inspired by rural life in New England, and often explored complex social issues and philosophical matters. Among Frost's most renowned works are the poems "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and "The Road Not Taken."
Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 - May 15, 1886)
An introvert by nature, American poet Emily Dickinson wrote around 1,800 poems, but only seven of them had been published during her lifetime. Remaining relatively obscure in life, her work would only gain prominence years after her death. Dubbed "The Nun of Amherst" for her reclusive ways and for never having married, she is most known for her poems about death and immortality, although she also wrote about faith and nature.
Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849)
A foremost figure of the American Romantic Movement, Edgar Allan Poe is of course known for his short stories and poems dealing with dark and morbid themes. He is considered to be the father of detective fiction as well as an early contributor to the then-aborning science fiction genre. Known for suspenseful tales such as "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," Poe's macabre poems include "Annabel Lee," "The Bells," and "The Raven."
William Shakespeare (baptised April 26, 1564 - died April 23, 1616)
Known as "The Bard of Avon," the revered English poet and playwright William Shakespeare is renowned throughout history as the greatest writer in English literature and drama, and is considered as England's national poet. His celebrated and oft-quoted body of work include 38 plays, 154 sonnets and other various poems. Alongside Shakespeare's most famous works such as the plays "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet," he has written the two erotic narrative poems "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece."
Oscar Wilde (October 16. 1854- November 30, 1900)
A celebrity in Victorian era London, Irish dramatist, author and poet Oscar Wilde was one of the most successful literary figures of his time. Famous for his sharp wit, Wilde is famous for novels such as "The Picture of Dorian Gray," and his poetry include "The Sphinx," "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" and "To My Wife-With a Copy of My Poems."
Some of them were celebrated during their day. The rest of them would not live to see their talent get their due. But they shall live on through the poetry which has outlived them, and the legacy of these famous poets shall endure for as long as the written word exists to move and inspire generations hence.
